The Swedish National Agency for Education identifies a worrying trend: Girls’ school results are declining
A new report from the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket) shows an unexpected development in Swedish schools. For the first time in a long while, the gap between boys’ and girls’ school results is narrowing—not because boys are performing better, but because girls’ results have declined. Girls also report experiencing more stress, lower well-being, and less peace of study compared to boys.
Skolverket highlights that girls’ increased use of social media is linked to poorer well-being, which in turn affects their school performance. Digital use often brings constant pressure, comparisons with others, and difficulties in disconnecting.
At MyPauze, we view this development with great concern. No student should have their future opportunities limited by stress, pressure, or unhealthy digital habits. Something must be done—and it must be done now. We need to dare to take initiative and break the harmful patterns that risk becoming normalized.
The foundation is laid at an early age. Therefore, it is crucial that we set clear guidelines for mobile phone use and build healthy digital habits from the start. It is not only about protecting children and young people here and now, but also about giving them the right conditions to succeed, feel well, and have confidence in the future.
